AUSTRALIA’S first avocado festival will take place in Western Australia next month.
The Karragullen Expo, organised by the Hills Orchard Improvement Group (HOIG), will incorporate the West Australian Avocado Festival on October 11.
The festival is aimed at promoting the taste and health benefits of avocados through cooking demonstrations, growing advice and avocado product sales.
Guest chef Vince Garreffa from Mondo Di Carne will be on hand to demonstrate some of his favourite avocado recipes.
There will also be avocado trees for sale, avocado orchard visits, plus childrens' activities and giveaways.
The Expo itself has nearly 100 exhibitors booked in.
The Expo has been running for more than 30 years and has made the gradual transition from a strictly horticultural day to a combined horticulture/community event that saw about 5000 people through the gate in 2013.
In 2013 it won the Premiers’ Award for a Community Event.
Western Australia is the second largest avocado growing region in the country (21 per cent), with Central Queensland the largest (32pc).
Entry costs $10 for adults, $5 pensioners and children over 12 years old, and those under 12 are free.
