THE South Australian Produce Market (SAPM) has been granted approval to build a new Food Precinct Expansion which will become a one-stop-shop for the hospitality, retail, export buyer and household customers.
The Food Precinct Expansion will be located at the SAPM Pooraka Centre and will provide small to medium food processors the opportunity to take their businesses to the next level.
It will capitalise upon SAPM’s existing annual trade of fresh produce between wholesalers, growers and hundreds of retail operators.
The new precinct will enable operators to process and provide fresh fish, meat, baked goods, ready meals and fresh produce to both wholesale clients and retail customers
SAPM chief executive officer, Angelo Demasi, said the project was a way to service the rapidly growing North, North-Eastern and North-Western populations that were currently underserviced and would compliment other food initiatives and developments emerging in these regions.
“This Food Precinct Expansion is ideally situated adjacent to Main North Road to capture retail customers from throughout Northern Adelaide and it builds upon SAPM’s strengths in logistics and fresh produce export consolidation,” Mr Demasi said.
“The facilities will meet customer and food compliance requirements for local and export markets with shared infrastructure and amenities to remain cost effective for tenants.
“We also want to give them access to export markets through the South Australian Produce Collective business to reach markets outside of Australia.
“It is intended that a feature of the Food Precinct Expansion will also be a cooking and education centre to enable the public and school children to understand the benefits of cooking and consuming fresh products and produce.”
Registrations of interest to lease areas are now being received and negotiated with numerous South Australia’s successful small and medium sized food processing companies.
The Precinct is planned to open within two years.
