LENSWOOD Apples has released its first internally red-fleshed apple.
What's more, the public can grow them.
Hardware and nursery giant, Bunnings Warehouse, has begun stocking Lenswood's Redlove apple trees.
The trees will be available from independent gardening centres from June.
The Redlove reportedly tastes like a Granny Smith with similar cooking attributes while retaining a red colouring once the apple has been juiced, sliced or even baked.
The tree itself holds attractive and striking characteristics, including a pinkish blossom with the leaves and bark showcasing a mixture of dark reds and pinks, making it potentially a highly sort-after item in the home garden market.
Lenswood says the tree is easy to grow, disease resistant, comes in both dwarf and columnar versions and is ideal for either planting in the garden or pots.
More than 20 years in development, Redlove is a mid to late February harvest and is Blackspot and powdery mildew resistant.
The apple was launched at a luncheon at Pike and Joyce Restaurant, Lenswood where local Redlove apple growers joined more than 60 leading South Australians from the restaurant, catering, hospitality, gardening and retail respective industries.
Redlove apple trees are available from Bunnings Warehouses at a recommended retail price of $59.
