SYDNEY Markets has relaunched its Fresh for Kids program after more than 20 years.
Fresh for Kids aims to get children consuming more fresh produce, portraying “fresh” as desirable, diverse and delicious.
Sydney Markets has been working with a variety of professionals to extend and energise the program to bring it into the 21st century.
Fresh for Kids’ nutritionists, Carolyn Treweek, said she had been aware for some time of the need for such a program.
“The original Fresh for Kids program was developed in response to the alarmingly low levels of fresh fruit and vegetable consumption by primary school aged children,” Ms Treweek said.

“This is prime growth and development time for children, so inadequate fibre and vitamin intake can have significant consequences in adult life.
“Whilst the Fresh for Kids mission remains the same – encouraging children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, the way we deliver this message needed a revamp.”
Sydney Markets CEO, Brad Latham, said this fresh new approach seeks to be both engaging and attractive for children, parents and canteen managers.
“Kids today need more than a lecture on the food pyramid to have them understand what is good for them to eat,” Mr Latham said.
“They are looking for food choices that tantalise palettes, and are easy and fun to eat. Adults around them are often at a loss as to how to provide the best options.”
The new Fresh for Kids program has a village approach to caring for the dietary needs of children, with resources available for school canteens, teachers, parents and kids themselves.
The new Fresh for Kids website was launched last week.
