OUT of the high-vis vests and beanies, members of Sydney Markets Limited donned shorts and sunscreen last month for a tour of mango farms in the Northern Territory.

The tour was part of the SML Annual Regional Industry Visit initiative.

The Sydney Markets Limited (SML) board of directors and senior management team travelled to the NT for a three-day journey across Darwin engaging directly with growers and hearing first-hand about issues facing the industry.

With almost half of Australia’s mangoes produced in the NT, the group visited Jenko’s Mangoes (Noonamah) and Cheeky Farms (Lambells Lagoon) where they met with growers and toured the facilities.

Sydney Markets chief executive officer, Brad Latham, said growers were at the core of Sydney Markets’ business.

“Growers are tasked with the incredible responsibility of feeding the nation. It is vitally important that we develop a strong understanding Australia’s produce growing regions and the challenges faced by growers,” Mr Latham said.

“At Sydney Markets, we pride ourselves on building and maintaining strong relationships with our supply partners.

“It is our job to provide a central marketplace which supports the interests of the whole supply chain – our growers, wholesalers and retailers.”

Over the years, local and international demand for Australian mangoes has steadily increased with the 2017/18 season producing more than 10 million trays for the first time.
