SOME Italian charm will hit Australian fruit shelves this month in the form of an apple.
The Modì Apple will be gracing Coles supermarket shelves next week, marking its
official launch to Australian consumers.
Grown in Australia, the Modì Apple's attributes include a high crunch and sweetness.
The Modì will be available through the Melbourne wholesale market and in Coles stores in Victoria from next week for two weeks and then in NSW Coles stores from the beginning of October.
Originally conceived by Italian apple Breeders in Ferrara, Italy, the unusual name comes from Amedeo Modigliani, an artist born in Livorno and affectionately known as Modi to his friends.
Modigliani was famous for his portraits of women painted using intense red earth colours, just like those of the Modì Apple.
The apple is described as a "vibrant red apple with a yellow background, encompassing a modern taste which strikes the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, crunchiness and juiciness".
Australian Modì Apples are grown in the Goulborn Valley, Victoria, and will this year be available during September and October.
Rocky Varapodio, of Oakmoor Orchards, Ardmona, said he was excited to bring the delicious Modì to Australian consumers for the first time.
"Modì Apple is unlike any other apple - it has an unforgettable crunch and a sweetness that makes it perfect for eating on its own or added to your favourite recipes," Mr Varapodio said.
“Modì Apple will definitely stand out on the shelf amongst other apples - its deep, rich, red colouring is unmissable.
"Australian consumers are in for a sweet treat with this Italian bellezza.”
Freshmax Australia marketing manager Matthew Crouch said the company was delighted to bring the apple down under.
"But shoppers will need to be quick as they’re only available for a short window of time this year. We’re confident that after one bite, consumers will be eagerly awaiting their return next year,” Mr Crouch said.
