HOLLYWOOD often throws up a story set on a farm – so we thought we’d take the time to reflect on some of the best movies that have showcased life on the land.

5 – At Any Price
This 2012 American drama film focuses on the competitive world of agriculture with ambitious father Henry Whipple (Dennis Quaid) wanting his rebellious son Dean (Zac Efron) to help expand his family's farming empire.
Directed by Ramin Bahrani and written by Bahrani and Hallie Newton, the movie was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival.
4 – Babe
This 1995 movie filmed in Robertson is an adaptation of Dick King-Smith's 1983 novel The Sheep-Pig.
It tells the story of a pig who wants to be a sheepdog. Which, while it might not be every farm’s story, certainly highlighted some of the realities of farm life.
3 – Places in the Heart
This 1984 American drama film was written and directed by Robert Benton.
It tells the story of a Depression-era Texas widow who tries to save the family farm.
It was filmed in Waxahachie, near Dallas, Texas.
2 – The Horse Whisperer
This 1998 American drama film is based on the 1995 novel The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans.
Directed by and starring Robert Redford, it tells the story of a horse trainer who is hired to help an injured teenager (played by Scarlett Johansson) and her horse back to health following a tragic accident.
1 – Charlotte’s Webb
There has been two film adaptations of this book of the same name by E.B. White.
Both the 2006 and the 1973 versions tell the story of a spider who helps save a pig from the dinner table.
