LOGISTICS company Orora Limited is introducing real-time cold-chain monitoring to its network of trucks and handling facilities.
Orora has secured an exclusive distributorship for Israel-based BT9's Xsense system which provides up-to-the-minute information on the state of a shipment of refrigerated vegetables or fruit with the aim of providing decision-making data.
The system has implications for the dairy and meat sectors as well.
It involves using Xsense HiTags, disposable small tags about the size of a USB stick that sit within the perishable cargo and relay information back to the owner or relevant parties, from the farm to the retail outlet.
The technology provides continuous transmission of online alerts and information, or collects vital data offline for future analysis.
The automated analytics and reports give customers the tools to identify and correct any problems, such as temperature fluctuations, to maintain the quality of perishable products, reduce waste and streamline logistics.
The live flow means those involved along the cold chain can strategically intervene before product damage occurs.
Orora managing director and CEO Nigel Garrard said the Xsense allows prompt cold-chain supply decisions, leading to proactive quality assurance practices.
“This system is a leader in providing a holistic approach to cold-chain management. It monitors, analyses and disseminates relevant quality data and recommendations throughout the entire cold chain,” Mr Garrard said.
"This technology has been widely used overseas and we are delighted to be able to bring it to Australia for the benefit of Orora customers and, ultimately, for the benefit of all Australians who buy and consume products that depend upon effective cold chain operations,” Mr Garrard said.
“We will work with our customers to tailor solutions using the Xsense system and further improve supply-chain performance”.
Last October, Orora announced a strategic partnership with AHG Refrigerated Logistics.
The Xsense system will work in with Orora's corrugated cartons and integrated logistics network.
Orora supplies a range of fibre, metal and glass packaging solutions, as well as packaging-related services including distribution and recycling.
It employs 5700 people across 124 sites in seven countries.
