Prices are soaring as demand for avocados has outweighed supply over the last month, causing a national shortage.
In one of Wagga’s big supermarket chains Hass avocados are being sold for $4 each, and in capital cities prices have risen to almost $8 each.
Lachlan Robinson, owner of the Trail Street Coffee Shop, has noticed the increase in pricing of avocados, a popular item on their menu. Mr Robinson said said that a trend was noticeable with pricing of avocados around this time of year.
Covering the increased price by increasing the cost on their menu items isn’t an option for the cafe as “there’s only a certain amount people will pay for it”.
Demand for avocados is constantly growing. Avocados Australia estimates consumption in 2016/17 as just over 3.5kg per person.
There is hope for avocado lovers yet, with North Queensland avocado produce starting to be picked and Avocados Australia predicting the bulk will hit our supermarkets from mid-February, providing some price relief.
