FAR North Queensland's Natural Evolution has been recognised in the Premier of Queensland's Export Awards, taking out the accolade for emerging exporter.

The groundbreaking business was dreamt up by Krista and Rob Watkins to turn wasted fruit and vegetables into food protein powders, starting with green banana flour and moving on to to create sweet potato flour.

The Walkamin couple received the award at a gala event held in Brisbane last Thursday. Their company was also a finalist in the sustainability category.

Queensland has around 7300 goods exporting companies of which 40 per cent are based in regional Queensland.

In the 12 months to August 2019, the state's merchandise exports were worth $87.4 billion - an increase of 13.8 per cent from the previous year.

Natural Evolution will now go on to compete in the Australian Export Awards in Canberra on December 3.
