Cos Lettuce
The highlight of the SPS Cos lettuce at the field days will be the new mini cos varieties which are ideal for twin heart, prepack presentation.
- Tyrion is a cool weather harvest green mini type to replace Elf.
- SPS 424-9 for the Poco/Joshua market Australia wide. Slow to close 3/4 size.
- Pixie is a new red type for year-round harvest in the mini segment.
Watch out for these in sample trials as they are all new.
Multileaf lettuce
Having new breeders on board, SPS has a lot to show in this segment, and the field day is a real bonus to help showcase the new lines.
The company has new material from a range of sources to introduce into the Australian and New Zealand markets.
- Wildling: A green multileaf lettuce with high Anthracnose and Sclerotinia tolerance. Large yield and very resistant to bolting, a must for all salad growers.
- Rioli: A dark red multileaf lettuce with a great disease resistance package and slow to bolt. This variety has astonished breeders in field testing throughout 2019 and 2020 for consistent performance.
Broccoli
The new nil purple breeding and greener coloured varieties of broccoli are proving popular for growers producing for both export and local markets.
See the complete SPS Broccoli range at the field day site, for summer through to the depths of winter harvesting.
- Overland: A green broccoli with great uniform harvesting, so all heads come in at once, and very good performance in cooler autumn weather. Make sure to have a look at the firm green heads of Overland and check out is performance in the plots.
Spinach
The chance to show the brand-new spinach to the market will be highlighted at the field days.
SPS will have beds of baby spinach on display which are divided into summer, autumn, spring and winter types.
The company will also have a range of bunching spinach and even an innovative red-stemmed spinach, Carmine. See the complete spinach range at the field day up close and personal.
- Portsea: This is a good commercial variety with thick leaves and a high yield per hectare.
- Jinx: This has great potential for the cold winter months, as consumers want spinach all year around. The vigor and dark green color of Jinx gives growers a winter option.
- Diablo: This spinach is a new Autumn and spring type and is commercial 2020 with a great dark colored leaf.
The SPS team looks forward to hosting growers at its tent so drop by and visit the friendly staff.
