THE year-round availability of passionfruit is being played up as the marketing angle for the sector this winter.

Passionfruit Australia has released a series of recipes and insights into the fruit, encouraging consumers to add a "splash of the tropics into winter desserts".
Passionfruit grower Dennis Chant said it wasn't commonly known passionfruit was available in winter as well as summer.
He said the fruit was a fantastic way to put some culinary warmth into the colder months.

"Passionfruit is often synonymous with summer but in fact it is available all-year round, with a peak in winter too," Mr Chant said.
"Its exotic flavour brings a sweetness and freshness to winter favourites like porridge, bircher muesli, or indulgent desserts like puddings, cheesecakes and slices."
Some recipes have been released to inspire those in the kitchen, including passionfruit and white chocolate chip cookies; passionfruit self-sauce pudding; passionfruit pancakes; passionfruit cheesecake swirl brownies; and passionfruit melting moments.

The health properties of the fruit have not been forgotten either with Passionfruit Australia highlighting the vitamin C content as a means of keeping immune systems healthy.
It's also a source of gut-loving fibre, which helps keep gut health in check.
The organisation has advised shoppers to keep passionfruit in a bag in the fridge for them to last up to a month.

It also gave the tip to choose heavy and plump passionfruit as it's a sign of more pulp inside, regardless of wrinkles on the outside.
With the majority of canned passionfruit imported and containing large amounts of added sugar, Passionfruit Australia has also pushed for the purchase of fresh product.
