DON'T believe everything you read about avocado prices.
That's the summary from Avocados Australia which has hit back at metropolitan media outlets for reporting retail prices as low as 80 cents each earlier in April.
Avocados Australia chief executive officer John Tyas was recently contacted by various media channels to provide comment on the apparent drop of avocados below $1 each.
While not naming the outlets specifically, Mr Tyas said there was mis-quoting in some of the articles and reports.
He said avocados were currently retailing at between $1.80 and $2 each in the major retailers across the country.
There was no evidence of avocados being sold at 80c each, according to the national body.
"We monitor avocado retail chain prices across Australia on a weekly basis," Mr Tyas said.

"Despite clarifying the current retail prices, some media channels are continuing to report that avocado prices are currently very low, which is incorrect.
"Be it Hass avocados or Shepard avocados, the price varies depending on supply and demand.
"Whilst we currently have good supplies of Australia avocados, domestic demand is currently strong and we are expanding our footprint in key export markets."
Utilising different varieties, Australian avocados are available all year round.
The Shepard season (February - April) is coming to a close and new season Hass will begin to dominate supplies in the coming weeks.
Avocado prices have suffered falls though on the back of large crops in the past year.
Avocados Australia said it is working across the industry to increase domestic consumption and to increase consumption of Australian avocados in key export markets.
"Avocados Australia is working with the Australian government to open new export markets and we are supporting growers to increase their capacity and capability to export," Mr Tyas said.
He encouraged consumers to buy Australian avocados in retail stores.
